Midwife – Forever

The first track, “2018” begins, and minor arpeggiated piano chords play with some tonal guitar noise in the background. Soon, ethereal, feminine vocals come in, sing for four bars, and then a soft drum beat is played as a guitar plays a mostly arpeggio-based melody. The vocals come in and sing another four bars, then the guitar-work becomes a little more complex, with a second guitar strumming a chord with a delay effect on it also playing. The vocals come in again, sounding more urgent, singing four bars again. The music plays on for a bit, and then mostly stops, with some reverb-laden, effect-based ambience droning for a minute or so, until the song ends.

In “Anyone Can Play Guitar”, a mid-paced drum beat plays, and is soon accompanied by power-chords supported by a doubling bass line. Then, the ethereal vocals come in, singing for four bars until they become a little more insistent. The main line of the song is repeated, with a little bit of electric guitar playing after the second bar. Two guitars using different styles of distortion come in playing complimenting melodies and arpeggios as the vocalist continues to sing. This goes on, and then the song ends.

“Vow” begins, and a slow, simple melody is played on an electric piano, which subtly develops over the course of a few minutes.

In “Language”, a chorused guitar plays arpeggiated chords, while obscure-sounding fragments of tonal, effect-laden guitar play in the background, and the ethereal vocals come in and sing a couple bars. Soon a piano adds a chord progression, with a bass drum being played softly. The vocals sing a couple more bars, then go silent. After several bars, there is more singing, until the song ends.

“C.R.W.F.” is next. Some prose is recited. Then, reverb-laden keyboard pads play a drone, and guitars play jangly effects-heavy fragments. The keyboards swell, and some notes are added. As this happens, the jangly fragments develop a bit more. This goes on until the end of the song, as the drone fades out.

The final track is “S.W.I.M.” A heavy, trebly two power-chord progression plays as some keyboards play in the background behind it. Then, at once, a simple drum beat plays, with a reverbed, chorused guitar playing simple arpeggiated notes to a simple power-chord progression. The ethereal vocals begin, perhaps a little more distorted than before. A guitar comes in and plays a simple melody. Another guitar plays a little chord-work. The vocals cease, but the simple guitar melody continues, and then the vocals continue. Some of the chord work almost–but not quite–descends into noise. The song ceases quite suddenly, ending the album.
