Tongues of Mount Meru – The Hex of Light

“Foliage” begins, and a loud, distorted saw-tooth-wave drone plays, and is soon accompanied by a synth pad which ebbs in and out of the sound for a bit, then establishes itself as a secondary drone. It drops out for a second, then comes back in and continues droning. The drone goes on unaltered for a couple minutes, then a barely audible synth string starts fading in, droning as well. The sound is altered a bit, and another synth string becomes louder, slowly. The sound continues, hanging in the air like a frozen apparition. The pad becomes louder, even threatening to overtake the loud, distorted saw-tooth drone.

A few notes are played, almost indiscernibly, in the lower-mid registers. The lining up of harmonics in various configurations causes a very textured sound. A few dissonant synths play at lower volume, then become consonant, then dissonant, then consonant again. A very dissonant, blatantly audible tone is played briefly, then drops out. The sound continues mostly unaltered for a while. The tone that played in a dissonant manner now plays a more consonant short melody but not very audibly. Then dissonance returns once more, but not as loudly as before.

Subtle melody continues to play with the drone, barely perceivable. Some parts of the droning whole drop out a bit, giving more prominence to the distorted saw-tooth-wave drone. There is some subtle alteration, and then the track suddenly ends.

The second track, “Affinity Birds”, begins with another long drone, mostly consonant. A rumbling noise begins to play along with it after a while. A synth plays in dissonance along with the drone. Another note, which adds more dissonance, is added. The saw-tooth drops out a bit, giving more prominence to the rest of the mix. The drone sounds like a dissonant high part with more consonant mid and lower parts of the spectrum. Another note is added which sounds somewhere between dissonance and consonance with the rest of the notes. The drone plays unchanged for quite a bit of time, and then a hint of something else comes in and out of the mix.

A note comes in, playing in dissonance with the high part of the mix. Then a bit of something almost melody-like appears at the edge of things, difficult to discern. Next, a bass tone plays in a rhythmic pattern, followed by what sounds like a synth string playing rhythmically for a bit, and then droning. The bass drops out some, leaving a droning saw-tooth to focus the attention on. This sawtooth then drops out, leaving a lot of dissonant notes playing. This drones for quite some time, until the track abruptly cuts out at the end of the album.
