Jo Johnson – Knowledge of the Possible

Knowledge of the Possible begins with “Haunted by the Legend of Better Days”, and the sound of noise, perhaps with some ring modulation, can be heard fading in slowly, then out slowly. A richly textured brass pad is heard next, as sustained chords are played using it, as the noise fades a bit in and out in the background for a while. After a few minutes, a synthesized string comes in, which has some resonance on it, and plays a melody. After this, a string with the character of a square wave plays a few notes.

Plucked synths with fast decays can be heard in a repetitious melody, as a different repeating melody can be heard behind them. A synth string plays in the low part of the higher registers. A filter swept pad then fades in very slowly, accompanied by the string with the character of a square wave, then breaks into a different chord after tension has been built up and plays a progression of chords slowly. The track then fades out.

“Discontent Arises From A Knowledge of the Possible” begins with a shimmering synthesizer that plays a very slow chord progression. A plucked synth arpeggio with a moving filter on it slowly fades in as a brass pad swells behind it. Then, for a moment, the arpeggios are by themselves, and they then slowly fade out, then in, back and forth over time as the pad behind it continues to swell. The arpeggios change to different notes with the timbre of the notes shifting to something more pulse-wave like, although they soon become more muted and pluck-like again. The arpeggios fade out, and then so does the rest of the track.

“Forward! The Day is Breaking!” begins with an arpeggio-like repetition of notes with a filter on it, as a pad fades in behind it, very slowly progressing through a series of chords. The filter changes so that the arpeggio like series of notes becomes more prominent, and notes are altered and added slowly, creating a sense of movement toward some goal. The arpeggios play by themselves and then slowly fade out, ending the track as well as this release.
