Ceylan – Le long murmure des siècles

The first track of this EP, “L’existence est un songe”, starts out with a noisy drone that has a low-pass filter that progressively opens up more of the sound-spectrum as time goes on.

The next track, “Le jeu des faux-semblant” begins with a droning brass-like synth tone, and reverb-laden synth strings and voice-like synth are played over it in a manner which is actually atonal, but does not sound as discordant as that word implies, although it becomes more so as the minutes wear on. The sound of scraping starts to play, and a single short synth plays like a doppler radar sound. A sound like a whale-song plays intermittently, and the track ends.

“Errance” begins with an obscure-sounding drone soon accompanied by rumblings, then tones and synths with a futuristic aesthetic. This continues for a short period of time, and then the track fades out. In “Splendeur de l’etre” a saw-tooth based drone starts, then is accompanied by wind-like sounds with a lot of reverb on them, and distant noises of an indiscernible nature. The wind-like sound becomes more distorted, and the sound becomes chaotic and full of various noises. The wind sounds as if its modulated by another waveform. A cello, probably sampled, plays a soft, mournful melody as the wind dies down but leaves the various other noises playing. Then the noises stop and the track ends.

The final track, “Excursion spleenetique”, begins with a low drone of noise, which is joined by synth strings that also drone. A modified string patch plays at a higher pitch a repeating note in a staccato manner. Then, more strings come in and play a simple, melancholy melody. A distorted voice starts speaking in French. The strings become louder and the melody becomes slightly more complex, and plays for a while, until the track ends.
