CHOKE – GRIP DOMINANCE

The release GRIP DOMINANCE by CHOKE begins with soft organ playing a three note minor-key melody under short, synthesized bell tones with a delay effect on them. After a while, there is a hint of bongos playing an echoing rhythm behind the bell tones. More taps are added to the delay on the bells, making the sound echo more on each note. The bass notes flow as three single monolithic tones under the rest of the music.

The character of the progression of notes is an ascending one, going from lower notes to higher ones. The delay on the notes makes the last note spill out from the end of the progression into the beginning, creating a slight sense of ambiguity to the progression as it repeats itself. It is dirge-like, a bit funereal in tone.

The repeating pattern remains unchanged for about six minutes. After that, there is a hint of alteration to the delay on the bongos, but no other changes except those already mentioned for most of the track, except in the last minute, where the bells and bongos fade out, leaving the organ and bass. The organ fades out, and at the end there is only the bass playing, until that cuts out, and the track is over.
