SINNEN – MUR

The EP release MUR by the band SINNEN begins with the track “DIVE_TERN”. This track starts with a slow beat which relies on the ride cymbal to propel it forward, and then a guitar comes in laden with heavy amounts of reverb and plays an Eastern scale of some kind which I can’t quite pinpoint, but which repeats several times with no other accompaniment except for the drums, until some electronics come in and play a cracking soundscape, heavy on bass, which threatens to overwhelm the guitar, which continues its esoteric-sounding melody, and then the song fades out.

“SOUWA” begins with a heavy, insistent, simple drum beat, and then what sounds like a heavily distorted bass guitar, but might not be, plays a single note repeatedly, and is soon accompanied by a guitar with heavy effects on it, which plays long notes that sound more like a distant string ensemble, but if listened to closely have the distinct character of a distorted guitar, heavily processed though it is.

In “ALENE”, the song starts off with lots of feedback-laden guitar creating a soundscape with a discernible melody and a higher-pitched droning note. After some time, the guitar plays in a wash of distortion, which is soon outdone by a very loud, even greater wash of distortion that plays a drone for a short time, ending the song.

“SNOWDOWN” starts with another wash of guitar distortion, reverb, and other effects, and as the guitar drones, the drummer plays an insistent beat with a staccato style to it. The character of the guitar shifts in a bit to something difficult to explain, but which could be said to be more active sounding, with more melodic movement, shifting distorted harmonics, and other indicators of structural development to the song, but which still communicates a sense of stasis by being in the context of drones and an unchanging drum beat. The EP ends on this note, fading out.
