Garrote – Valley of Knives

“Valley of Knives” is the name of both this EP and the first track. As it begins, a few drum hits play in repetition, which leads to manic female vocal samples with reverb and delay on them accompanied by an instrument being played backwards. The vocals scream. There is the pulse of a bass drum interspersed with the other drums, and some noise being played backwards. The vocals become very loud and seem to communicate pain and malevolence as they sing and scream. They play with chorus and are played on top of each other a bit. There are some glitched vocals being played backwards after a while as well, which quickly reach a sustained crescendo. All in all, there are many different vocal samples with many different effects applied, and portions are very extreme in the emotion that they seem to convey.

A string sample being played backwards with a low voice singing plays, and the vocals maniacally laugh as another set of vocals seems to chant. They play backwards. The bass drum, which was gone, returns. The vocals cease, leaving the drums. The bass drum plays louder, and the vocals return, with a lot of echoing delay on them.

“Valley of Knives 2” begins with what sound like pitched down sounds with a lot of reverb on them. The sounds churn and develop, sounding a bit like animal noises that have been slowed down and played backwards. Some drums come in, playing a syncopated rhythm. They stop very briefly, then continue. A very deep bass hit comes in play at certain parts, and there are drum hits that are played backwards. The drums once again cease for a bit, leaving the churning sounds to themselves. The churning sounds cease, not quite all at once, but within the course of a few seconds, and the album is over.
