Simon McCorry – The Light Only Blinds

“Sanctus” begins, and an ambience which seems based on an organ, but is harsher in tone plays and then drones. After a while a synth pad slowly fades in, which morphs and becomes distorted and seems to provide contrast to the original organ. The synth pad has the character of low strings, which ebb in and out. The mix has very little treble in it, with most of the sound coming from the lows and the mids. At the end, the pad fades out, leaving the organ which started the piece to end the track.

“Lux Aeterna” starts out with a distorted, heavy synth which drones. There is some periodic resonant feedback which plays as well. A filter-swept drone comes in. Hints of some other reverb-laden sounds can be heard at the edge of the mix, which come back louder, and then cease. They return again, playing twice. Then, there is a period without them, until they come in playing many times. The track ends.

“Benedictus” begins with synths making some mostly tonal noise, perhaps with a little ring-modulation on them, with a pad playing in the background behind them. Backwards strings can then be heard dancing across the stereo spectrum. There is a great deal of pitch modulation to a synth patch, and some brass pads are played in a discordant manner. A synthesizer’s pitch dives to a very low frequency, remaining there and bubbling sound up from the bottom of the spectrum. It ceases, then does so once more. The sound of a synth with the pitch being slid back and forth becomes apparent, as well as a brass patch doing so in a similar manner. After a while, all sound cuts out except for one synth, which plays and fades out, ending the track as well as this release.
